To mark the LSTM’s 125th anniversary, you will be taken on a journey from Liverpool to West Africa exploring the legacy and influence of Mary Kingsley – an ethnographer, writer, and explorer – on the work of LSTM. In this first of three lectures which reflects on the intersection between LSTM’s history and its science, you will see how Mary Kingsley’s influence has rippled through to present-day, in the institute’s work using community-led approaches to achieve health equity in our city. This talk is part of a wider National Lottery Heritage-funded project called LSTM-Past, Present, and Future.
