Operation Fish was a British Second World War plan to safeguard national wealth from invasion. Beginning in 1939, the government secretly transferred gold reserves, securities, and artworks overseas, mainly to Canada. Shipments crossed the Atlantic under heavy guard. The operation ensured Britain could finance the war and survive economically if the UK were occupied. It involved coordination between the Treasury, Bank of England, Royal Navy, and Commonwealth authorities abroad discreetly.
