History Society field trip: Alfred Waterhouse architecture walk
Alfred Waterhouse, a prominent Victorian architect, left a lasting mark on Liverpool’s architectural heritage. Best known locally for designing the Victoria Building at the University of Liverpool, Waterhouse introduced a bold red-brick Gothic style that became emblematic of the university and inspired the term “red-brick university.” His work reflected a deep integration of form and function, blending aesthetics with modern construction techniques of the time. Waterhouse’s influence extended beyond education, shaping civic architecture and encouraging the use of terracotta and decorative detailing. His contributions helped define Liverpool’s identity during a period of rapid urban and cultural development in the 19th century.
The walk will be conducted by Professor of Architecture Iain Jackson. The walk will last approximately two hours
