The sad news has reached us that Austin Varney, one of our founder members, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, 10th November, 2021. He was in his early 90s.

Austin, who drafted the Society’s original Constitution, was a keen supporter of the Society since its inception and regularly attended our monthly talks. More recently, Austin generously donated a number of local history books to the Society’s library.

I was fortunate to work with Austin during the late 1950s in Liverpool’s City Lighting and Electrical Department. He went on to have a very successful local government career as an engineer and later as General Manager of the Mersey Tunnels.
