SUMMARY:History Society field trip: Herbert Rowse architecture walk
DESCRIPTION:Herbert Rowse significantly shaped Liverpool’s architectural identity in the early 20th century. Known for blending classical and modernist styles, his work brought a sense of grandeur and innovation to the city. Rowse’s most iconic contributions include the India Buildings, the Philharmonic Hall, and the Mersey Tunnel ventilation buildings, which combined function with Art Deco elegance. His designs reflected Liverpool’s commercial prominence and cultural aspirations, contributing to its international image. Rowse’s legacy remains embedded in the city’s skyline, with his buildings still admired for their elegance, craftsmanship, and enduring relevance to Liverpool’s architectural heritage and urban development.
The walk will be led by Professor of Architecture Iain Jackson and will take approximately two hours. Assemble at the Hillsborough memorial.
